My love/hate relationship with Linux will be ending in 2010. I am just fed up of the many workarounds needed just to get something as simple as a wireless card to work.

I never really wanted into the Linux world full time it was thrust upon me as a temporary emergency measure so I could once more have a working machine.

Unfortunately this temporary stop gap has lasted over 18 months. Some days have been great, others have been diabolical. It’s not much fun battling with your equipment, it is very counter-productive.

Say what you will about Microsoft, at least their OS works out of the box, you don’t have to have a degree in programming or search for hours to get the slightest piece of hardware to work.

I’m really optomistic about what Windows 7 has to offer. I thankfully missed the vista era, not fully though as my mother and her fiance use a vista laptop that has its fair share of mishaps.

I’m counting down the days to the end of my forced “marriage” to linux, I hope the divorce isn’t too messy.

Welcome to my first “Road Map 2010″ entry, as promised I would update you all on my plans for 2010, my personal roadmap as it were.

What has spurred me to write this entry is the amount of equipment/connection malfunctions that I have experienced thus far this morning.

I am going to get myself some office space. Enough for a single desk, a decent internet connection and facilities. Where I can plug in my laptop and get some work done.

I know you must all think I’m crazy, what are you going to offer people that warrants you to get your own office space?

Well I have a ton of services that I can offer people, I have many years office administration experience, I know my way around computers and have built my own for many years. I don’t necessarily have to do work for one client, I could do several clients at one time, the amount depends on how much time I can pack in one day. I do not know the logistics of how I’m going to manage being a remote worker, however I know it’s going to work.

Coupled with my store, I think I should do ok.

Ok, admittedly it may not be a new feature, more like a feature I stumbled across last night.

In tweetdeck if you click on a hastag in a tweet, it will automatically add a new search column and list all the tweets with that hashtag.

Cool or what?

Just read this article written by Andrew Laughlin for digital spy:

http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/broadcasting/a180923/public-to-shape-bbc-editorial-standards.html

This is a good idea the BBC consulting the public about their editorial processes. However my main worry is that the minority of viewers who think they speak for the whole of the country will demand that programming be diluted down so much that certain programs will lose their edge, humour and become dull and boring.

Imagine this minority getting their teeth into programmes like “Mock The Week”, “Never Mind the Buzzcocks” and “HIGNFY”. These programmes could become boring.

I admit that at times some programmes I do watch, sail close to the wind, if that does happen, I just chose another channel or I switch off the TV completely.

I hope the views from the members of the viewing people take this into account and are balanced in their arguments for what constitutes good editing standards.

Listen to your viewers, take their views on board, but please do not feel the need to act upon every suggestion you receive, you will just tie yourself in knots trying to please everyone.

Apologies to everyone that received a spam message from my richard.arblaster gmail account, it seems that my account had been infiltrated by a spam/phishing bot.

The password was changed last night.

Do not under any circumstances click the link contained within that email, just delete it.

As a precaution change your gmail password.

Rest assured that email was definitely NOT sent by me, I hate both types of spam the email/snail mail/leaflet and the real life meat variety.

Listen!

Posted via web from richardarblaster’s posterous

Busy day today, I have 2 dentist appointments, yes you heard it correctly the first time, not 1 but 2 appointments.

Regular check up this morning with my local-ish dentist. Then I’m off to Birmingham this afternoon to continue fittings for new teeth.

Then a whole lot of stuff in between, it’s going to be like a sandwich.

Congratulations to Tesco and their website.

You give me an option to phone you, you give me an option to send you a letter. However where is the option to email your webmaster?

All I want to do is ask a simple question about the way their site is displayed in Firefox 3.0.14. Especially their mobile phone site, it looks horrible.

So if any one knows the Tesco web devs they could point them in this direction. I would like to be able to read the whole of the site not have the bottom half of the site superimposed over the rest so it makes it unreadable.

Thanks.

I was reading an article in yesterday’s “Mail On Sunday” about delays in VAT registration affecting startups.

So my question to the tax experts is:

You are approaching the turnover threshold, you have put your VAT registration application in plenty of time, but you know that you are going to pass the threshold before your application is looked at because of the backlog.

What can you do in the meantime?

Please leave your answer in the comments below

You’ve heard of road maps in the context of software development?

Well I’m implementing my own road map for 2010, detailing what I would like to do and what I would like to happen. I will be creating a new category to chronicle my evolving road map, as items are added, items are pushed back for yet another year.

So please come back regularly and join me in my journey into 2010 and beyond.
