Why oh why do some people resort to firing their staff via email, instant messenger or blog?
If you are in a position to hire and fire someone then you should have the courage to tell the person face to face that their services are no longer required. You were more than happy to interview the person for the position in the first place so why the sudden reticence to do the firing face to face?
If you know that you are going to have to let people go, take some time out and have the courage to tell them to their face.
If it makes you feel bad to do it face to face, tough, it goes with the territory being a manager. You take all of that onboard when you go for that promotion, you cannot just have the nice fluffy bunny bits.
